Description

Abstract:

Plenoptic camera is a new imaging device that can acquire 3-D content. In this camera, through a microlens array (MLA), real-world is captured from multiple angles. The MLA is placed next to the image sensing sensor, and the recorded image is called Lenslet (LL) image. Since a LL image consists of light rays from different angles, a LL image shall contain the 3-D information of the scene. Hence, it can be converted to multiview (MV) images that can be captured by an array of camera. There is an existing conversion tool for this process, namely RLC (Reference Lenslet Conversion).

In this project, we aim to develop a new conversion tool from LL to other formats. The project will have following steps:

1. Study the RLC conversion tool and understand the details.
2. Create a tool that converts LL data to point cloud format.
3. Evaluate and compare MV images and point cloud representation, subjectively.
